State deaf to cries of Golden Spring

Published:Wednesday | October 10, 2018 | 12:08 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Two of our national television stations have not failed to carry footage of the deplorable condition of roads in the Golden Spring and Stock Farm areas in recent years. They have also carried footage of peaceful protests organised and executed by the residents who have reached boiling point in relation to the untenable situation.

The latest statements by our beloved member of parliament (MP), Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, appear incoherent. On the occasion of our first street protest earlier this year, she commented that the reason for the delays in repairing the roads was "due to priority being given to main roads".

At the time of the second protest, she said: "The delays had to do with her establishing the availability of funds for the repairs by the municipal corporation."

Five months have since elapsed and we have not heard by what means the differing statements she made can somehow advance our cause. What we have deduced, without a shadow of doubt, is that she has been made livid by the fact of the protests, and while we are aware of the negative publicity ascribed to the MP, resulting from our dissent, we have been left to our own devices in dealing with the neglect by successive governments.

Both Town Clerk Robert Hill, to whom we have written, and city engineer Norman Shand, who attended our last community meeting and made commitments to return to measure the affected roads, have failed to honour their pledges.

Last resort

We then went to the Office of the Prime Minister, which we deemed to be our last resort, only to be denied

an acknowledgement of

our presence or a return correspondence to our hand-delivered letters.

At the moment, the police have serious road issues while trying to respond to distress calls, and so, too, the solid-waste removal contractors because of the deplorable road condition.
